Are self-drive motorhomes the future?

It is often said that motorhomes provide the ultimate feeling of freedom and escape. Could we soon be seeing the day when you need not even drive your motorhome around and can simply be driven from destination to destination?

With the recent publication of Tesla’s design for a self-driving motorhome, could this dream become a reality sooner than one might think? Here, we will examine the reasons why self-drive motorhomes may be erupting onto the market to take over demand or on the contrary why this blissful idea may be a little further away than we imagine.

As pointed out by Tesla, the possibility of self-drive motorhomes opens key opportunities for drivers; including those which allow for greater enjoyment during long road trips and more opportunities to take in the beautiful scenery which rural drives often provide.

The domestic vehicle market across the world is rapidly developing self-driving models and so it is not difficult to imagine this trend extending to larger vehicles such as motorhomes.

Furthermore, Hymer, a prominent German motorhome manufacturer has unveiled a concept for a self-driving motorhome they call ‘Galileo’. This concept aims to revolutionise long-distance travel and put an end to stays in grotty motels with its spacious living area on a modest chassis size. These exciting developments promise to change the motorhome industry significantly, but when will this change come?

It is argued by many that self-driving technology has a long way to go before it will revolutionise our roads. Issues with artificial intelligence, ethics, and inconsistencies in performance show that the road to fully autonomous driving will not be easy and there are sure to be many twists and turns yet to come throughout its continued development. Google, a market-leading company in autonomous driving technology, have had major setbacks throughout their test programmes. Thus, whilst this technology is being ever improved it appears difficult to replace a human’s instinctive nature behind the wheel and to programme this into a computer instead. There are also issues concerning the differences in the ways humans and computers will drive, as humans notoriously don’t always follow the rules of the road in extreme cases or emergencies.

Whether self-driving motorhomes are indeed the future of our getaways is yet to be seen, but with recent technological advancements, we anticipate the day will be upon us at some point, whether that day is near or far!
