Scotland Questions

How much does it cost to hire a motorhome in Scotland?

Our Scotland motorhome rental prices range from around £395 to £1400 for 7 nights for 2 people. For accurate hire pricing of different durations and motorhome sizes, you can check our availability and pricing page or speak to a member of our team for further details.

Is the NC500 suitable for motorhomes?

Yes the NC500 suits motorhomes, but it depends on the size of your vehicle, driving confidence and the exact route you take. A large proportion of the route has A roads that are manageable with amazing scenery and excellent stopovers.

But there are also narrow single track roads with passing places, tight bends, steep gradients and limited visibility, more so on the west and north coasts. In Scotland some villages have small car parks and limited overnight sites to stop at so advanced planning is really important.

Our recommendation is to travel outside of the peak season, drive courteously, allow extra driving time and think about taking shorter daily distances for a more relaxed trip.

Can you sleep in a motorhome anywhere in Scotland?

In Scotland you can’t sleep in a motorhome anywhere you like. Access rights that may allow for wild camping don’t tend to apply to motorhomes. Overnight parking is only allowed when the landowner or site rules give permission.

Throughout Scotland you will find that many towns and attractions have car parks with no overnight sleeping signs and ignoring them can lead to a fine or being moved on. Responsible touring behaviour is important, try to arrive late, leave early, avoid putting out furniture and take rubbish with you. It is best to pitch at campsites as the safest option.

Where are the best places to go in a motorhome when in Scotland?

It’s a beautiful country to explore, especially in one of our motorhomes. Customers enjoy heading on a ferry to the Islands off the West Coast, such as Skye, Mull and Arran. The quiet roads and general escape from the rat race, make these idyllic Scottish locations an essential part of any motorhome trip to Scotland.

Scotland is gifted with many stunning buildings including the abundant castles and ancient fortifications, these include Glamis Castle, Eilean Donan, Stirling Castle and Cawdor Castle. That’s not forgetting the home of the Royals when in the Highlands – Balmoral, and what is surely one of the most iconic Scottish landmarks, Edinburgh Castle.

Many head to Scotland for its Whisky distilleries and they’re in abundance across the country. Whisky lovers are spoilt for choice, with some of the most popular and notable being those on Islay and in Speyside in the Highlands.

One often underestimated attraction in Scotland is its beaches. On your motorhome trip you’re likely to stumble across some hidden gems, many of which are empty even in the height of summer.

A trip to Edinburgh or Glasgow is also a must on your trip, it’s easy to find a suitable caravan or camping site on the edge of these cities, likewise with Scotland’s other major cities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Perth and Stirling.

What’s the difference between a campervan and a motorhome?

Some people refer to motorhomes as ‘campervans’ or ‘campers’. Even the term motorhome is often split as ‘motor home’, likewise with ‘camper van’. We’ve found that the term people use is often linked to their country of origin, for instance people travelling to Scotland from New Zealand may use the term ‘Scottish camper hire’ or those from Europe may prefer ‘Edinburgh campervan rental’. There are even more terms when you head to the USA, with the term ‘RV’ or ‘recreational vehicle’ used. To confuse even further you also have ‘campervan’ used widely to refer to a VW Campervan. You can see why we tend to stick to the term motorhome!
