Tips for traveling in a motorhome

We all know that when exploring a new location, the best way to do it is with your own vehicle, this ensures that you get to see exactly what you want at your own pace. It is without a doubt that whether you are a seasoned motorhome traveller or fresh to the motorhome scene that finding ways to make your trip easier and more pleasurable is a must.

Learn about your motorhome

Whether you are using your own personal motorhome or a rental, getting familiar with all aspects of the vehicle will be very beneficial for you and everyone else on your trip. This could include a lot of different things, such as:

  • Getting to know the fuel consumption of your vehicle and what features use more of it. This can help with long distance planning and organisation.
  • Get to know the size of what you will be driving. Almost always, a motorhome will be much bigger than your day to day vehicle; extra size means needing extra room when merging, parking or changing lanes.
  • Learn how quickly the motorhome accelerates and brakes when fully packed. This one is vital for your own safety and everyone else on the road. Bigger size and more weight means you will be slower at overtaking and braking so learning how to account for this is a must.
  • Most importantly, learning how everything functions in the motorhome such as how long the water, heating, gas etc will last, how the utilities on board the motorhome work and what kind of power supply and plugs the vehicle has.

Plan your trip

While a spontaneous approach to your trip might seem tempting, you will find it a lot less stressful getting around and finding places to stay with just a little planning. This can be as little or as much as you want and could include:

  • Planning your stopovers
  • Accounting for traffic and weather
  • Making a list of places you want to see on the way
  • Researching places to stay close to the area you want to explore
  • Make sure the places you are staying have all of the utilities you require (powered sites, showers etc.)

Utilise electricity where you can

The majority of travellers will almost always have an array of electronics such as a phone, camera, laptop etc. These appliances paired with the electricity that the motorhome requires to operate make for needing a lot of power. Charging your motorhomes batteries and all of your appliances while at a powered site will be a life saver, especially when travelling with kids.

Insurance, security and roadside help

This is vital for all motorhome owners but even more vital for rentals. The last thing you want is for something to go wrong and find out that you are liable. Make sure when travelling you are familiar with what insurance you have if a theft or accident occurs and make sure you know who to contact in case of a roadside emergency.
