Speed Limits and Road Rules in the UK for Motorhome Drivers

A motorhome driver planning a route with a map before following UK speed limits and road rules

Planning a motorhome holiday is one of the best ways to explore the UK but before hitting the road, it's worth brushing up on road rules formotorhome drivers. One of the most common questions we get asked at Just Go is whether speed limits are different for motorhomes. They can be and understanding the difference could save you from a costly fine and more importantly, keep you and other road users safe.

Are Motorhome Speed Limits Different to Cars?

Yes, and it catches many first time motorhome drivers off guard. The speed limit for a motorhome in the UK depends on the unladen weight (this is the weight without carrying any load, cargo or people) of the vehicle, if your motorhome weighs over 3.05 tonnes unladen, which is larger hiredmotorhomes with a full kitchen, bathroom and fixed sleeping area, then lower national speed limits apply on certain road types.

These speed differences are legal requirements set in the Highway Code:

  • On a single carriageway, the limit for a heavier motorhome is 50 mph, compared to 60 mph for a standard car
  • On a dual carriageway, it drops to 60 mph rather than 70 mph
  • The good news is that on motorways, both cars and motorhomes share the same 70 mph limit, so long stretches of motorway travel feel much the same as driving a car.
  • In built up areas, the standard 30 mph limit applies to all vehicles regardless of weight.
  • If you're planning to tow a car or trailer, additional speed limits apply, the motorway limit reduces to 60 mph when towing, regardless of vehicle weight

Exceeding these limits in a heavier motorhome is a criminal offence, possibly resulting in penalty points, fines or prosecution.

It's easy to keep pace with surrounding traffic, not realising you've crept above the legal limit, particularly on quiet rural A-roads where the national speed limit applies. We recommend setting your sat nav and/or cruise control to reflect the correct limit for your vehicle before you set off.

If you're unsure about the unladen weight of your hired motorhome, just ask us. We're always happy to confirm the details before you travel.

Can Motorhomes Drive in the Third Lane of a Motorway?

This is another rule that surprises a lot of people, if your motorhome exceeds 3.05 tonnes unladen, you are legally prohibited from using the third (outer) lane of a motorway. You must always stay in lanes one or two and the same restriction applies to lorries and large vans.

It's not just a legal matter; it's a safety one. A heavier vehicle requires more stopping distance than a car and lane three is not where you want to be at motorway speeds. Stick to the left and middle lanes, plan overtakes carefully to ensure safety, and you'll find motorway driving in a motorhome comfortable.

Navigating Narrow Lanes and Height Restrictions & More

Speed limits aside, there are a handful of other practical road rules that motorhome drivers should be aware of.

Height restrictions

Most motorhomes sit between 2.8 and 3.5 metres tall, which means low bridges, multi-storey car parks and rural roads can pose a hazard. Always programme your sat-nav to route around low bridges and check height barriers before pulling into any car park.

Narrow country lanes

Requiring patience, use passing places when you encounter oncoming traffic, take bends slowly and not being afraid to reverse if needed, it's far better than a scrape. Weight restrictions on rural roads and older bridges are also worth watching out for, particularly on scenic routes through national parks or along the coast.

Driving licences

Most standard UK Category B licences cover motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes. If you're looking at a larger vehicle, a Category C1 licence may be required. Always double check your licence requirements before you book a motorhome with Just Go to make sure you're covered.
