The UK Government has introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, this is a digital permit linked to your passport and is required for visitors who do not need a visa for short stays.

Do I need an ETA to visit the UK in 2025 or 2026?

Yes, if you are a non-visa national, the ETA scheme officially rolled out for non-European nationals (such as citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) in January 2025 and extended to European nationals in April 2025.

  • Can I use a foreign driving licence to hire a motorhome in the UK? Yes, provided you hold a full, valid national driving licence. If your licence is printed in English (or is an EU licence), it is fully accepted for driving in the UK for up to 12 months from your date of entry.
  • Do overseas visitors need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in the UK? You do not need an IDP if your national licence is printed in English (e.g. US, Canadian, Australian, or New Zealand licences) or is a standard EU/EEA licence. However, if your national driving licence is written in a non-Roman alphabet (such as Japanese, Cyrillic, or Arabic), you must obtain an IDP in your home country before travelling.

  • Credit Card: For the security deposit, which must be in the main driver's name.
  • Travel Insurance / Return Flight Details: Recommended as secondary proof of your visitor status
