Is There an Upper Age Limit for Hiring a Motorhome in the UK?

No, there is no official UK government age limit to drive a motorhome. However, individual motorhome hire companies and their insurers do set their own guidelines.

For many rental firms, the standard upper age limit is 79 years old. At Just Go, we welcome mature motorhome travellers, if you are aged between 70 and 79, you can easily hire from our fleet, provided you meet our insurance criteria, hold a valid licence, and are in good health.

Does Your Driving Licence Change When You Turn 70 in the UK?

Yes, your UK driving licence changes automatically when you reach 70:

  • Three year renewals: Your licence expires on your 70th birthday. To keep driving, you must renew it with the DVLA and then repeat this process every three years instead of every ten.
  • The C1 entitlement drop: If you passed your car driving test before 1 January 1997, you will have automatically received a Category C1 entitlement, this allows you to drive vehicles between 3,500kg and 7,500kg. When you renew your licence at 70, this C1 entitlement is dropped automatically unless you apply to keep it and undergo a medical assessment.

Do You Need a Special Licence to Drive a Motorhome After 70?

Whether you need a special licence depends entirely on the weight of the motorhome:

  • For motorhomes under 3,500kg (3.5 tonnes): You only need a standard Category B (car) licence. When you turn 70, your Category B entitlement is renewed for free without any medical tests.
  • For motorhomes over 3,500kg: You will need a Category C1 licence, to retain this after 70, you must submit a D2 application form & a D4 medical examination report completed by a doctor

Can I Still Drive a Motorhome If I've Lost My C1 Entitlement at 70?

Yes, absolutely, if you decided not to complete the medical paperwork to keep your C1 entitlement, or simply let it lapse, you can still enjoy a motorhome holiday because most of our modern Just Go fleet consists of comfortable, fully equipped motorhomes weighing under 3,500kg. These are fully legal to drive on a standard Category B licence, they are spacious, luxurious, and highly manoeuvrable, making them ideal for a stress free getaway.

What Medical Conditions Affect Your Right to Hire a Motorhome?

To hire a motorhome, you must meet the DVLA's standard fit to drive requirements and when renewing your licence, you are legally required to declare any medical conditions.

Some conditions that could affect your ability to drive or secure rental insurance include:

  • Dementia or cognitive decline
  • Neurological conditions (such as Parkinson's)
  • Insulin-treated diabetes
  • Certain cardiac issues (such as angina or having a pacemaker)
  • Visual impairments not corrected by glasses
  • Sleep apnoea or chronic daytime sleepiness
